The Orgasm Gap: Fighting the Difference Between Men's and Women's Orgasms

By: Emily Fata

The Orgasm Gap

Do you know about the orgasm gap?

Unfortunately, gender inequality exists in many places in society, from the well-known pay gap between cis* men and women to women's struggles to climb the ranks politically, socially, culturally, or intellectually, when compared to men.

When it comes to orgasms, unsurprisingly, that break still exists. Here's what we can do to change the perspective from 'male vs female orgasm' to just embracing human orgasm as a whole.

*Note: 'Cis' refers to a person's gender identity matching the gender that they were assigned at birth.

What is the Pleasure Gap?

The pleasure gap, also commonly referred to as the 'orgasm gap', refers to the disproportionate number of cis men having orgasms compared to the number of cis women having an orgasm. According to a study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, during partnered sexual activity, 95% of heterosexual men often or always reached orgasm, compared to only 65% of heterosexual women. This gap exists because women typically put their partners' pleasure above their own (more on that in a bit), while their male counterparts often do not.

While some may blame these struggles to be associated with being unable to enjoy sex after menopause or even discomfort caused by having sex postpartum, the fact remains that this pleasure gap affects women regardless of whether they have or haven't given birth, their age, socio-economic elements, and other similar considerations. This issue goes beyond turning yourself on and striving to create a sensual environment where orgasmic and profoundly satisfying sex can take place.

The orgasm gap can only be fixed when we regard the dilemma from a societal perspective. Why are more women unable to find orgasmic pleasure in sex and intimacy with a partner than men?

Male vs Female Orgasm Gap

 Male vs Female Orgasm

Sadly, many women experience negative emotions, particularly regarding the sex orgasm. The statistics speak volumes: a study published by the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy found that 81.6% of women do not reach climax due to intercourse alone (without clitoral stimulation and only focused on the G-spot). That is, when it comes to masturbation or even clitoral stimulation, the general response is higher.

Women having an orgasm can also experience it in different ways, including through anal sex when the A-spot is stimulated (this is similar to how penis owners can experience orgasm through anal when their P-spot is stimulated). Some women may become wetter (even squirting) while others may feel the deep, pleasurable sensations of orgasm with minor changes to their vaginal lubrication.

This is different from a man's orgasm, where stimulation of the shaft and testicles can bring a man to orgasm.

Closing the Orgasm Gap

Looking to close the pleasure gap and help women have the best orgasm of their lives?

First things first: we recommend keeping it real in the bedroom by encouraging complete and open communication in sexual relationships. Feeling like you can speak about your desires and fantasies with one another is a crucial step in determining what a woman needs in order to feel fully satisfied, sexually. Sometimes, it may be reducing discomfort during sex by finding and using the right lube or even using weed to enhance orgasm and fight anxiety during sex.

Taking about orgasms can be super sexy! Leading up to that Big O, tell your partner what feels good, what's about to send you over the edge. After orgasm (or during orgasm, if you're into that), let your partner know that you're climaxing and what it is that brought you there!

Please note that full and enthusiastic consent should always be explicitly stated by all parties involved in any sexual encounter.

Best Sportsheets Products to Enhance Women's Orgasm

Women having orgasms doesn't have to be complex. Whether it's using a penis or using sex toys for clitoral stimulation, deep G-spot penetration, or simply finding the optimal position to have mind-blowing sex with your partner, Sportsheets has you covered.

Bunny Vibe

Take masturbation to the next level with this body-safe silicone vibe. The ears and face are perfect for nestling against the vulva and clit, and three strong speeds paired with seven intense modes make this a sure win.

The G-Spot Link

Pivoting and angling your partner's lower half becomes second nature with two soft ankle cuffs and an adjustable central strap. The ankles are linked to lessen leg fatigue and lower back pressure, allowing penis owners to reach the G-spot during penetration consistently.

Kegel Exercise System

These aren't just amazing for Kegel exercises. No, these Kegels are excellent for vaginal stimulation, as well! Feel the tremendous stimulation by slipping one inside your vaginal canal and letting it work its magic.

O Rings - 4-Pack

While these are compatible with all interchangeable strap-ons, we love using these as cock rings, too! Slip it over your partner's shaft (and their balls, if they wish) and enjoy a longer-lasting erection for more intense clitoral or vaginal orgasms.

It's not just on the shoulders of vulva owners to take their pleasure into their own hands to close the orgasm gap, but also, their lovers with a penis. Cis women having an orgasm should not be a rare, or even an unheard of, phenomenon - they deserve to have the best orgasm possible and as frequently as any man.

Enjoying instant gratification is in our human nature and certainly isn't something anyone should be deprived of when it comes to mind-blowing sex.

What have you found to be the most significant discrepancies when considering male vs female orgasm? How can we, as a society, close the pleasure gap and help vulva owners have the best orgasm possible?
